Heritage Sites and Monument (HSM) Project

The Heritage, Sites and Monuments (HSM) project is an initiative of the Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission and Culture. The project which started in September, 2019 has been set up to identify, document and preserve missionary sites and monuments of historical significance, with the aim of educating people of the Christian faith about the contributions of indigenous Ghanaian people with their missionary counterparts to inspire commitment and dedication to the gospel mandate that has as its overarching goal, the transformation of society. It is being funded by the Church of the Palatinate.

The HSM project is in two phases; phase 1 and 2. The first phase (Phase One) has been completed; fifteen sites have been identified and visited by a four-member team from the Institute. Both motion and still pictures of these sites have been captured. In Phase Two, a documentary of the sites visited will be produced and a signage to identify each site. A colour brochure of the sites and monuments will be produced as well to educate Christians and the general public on the heritage of the PCG and her contribution to national development.

The fifteen sites include the following: Basel Mission Cemetery in Akropong, Basel Mission Cemetery in Osu, Aburi Cemetery, Christian Shrine in Abetifi, Ramseyer Training Center in Abetifi, Jamaican Well in Aburi, Alexander Worthy Clerk’s House in Aburi, Samuel Otu’s Mausoleum in Techimentia, Andreas Riis Building in Akropong, Salem’s Bell Tower – PUCG, Akropong, Sanatorium by Dr. Rudolf Fisch in Aburi, Landing Site of First Missionaries in Osu, Old Mission Building in Mayera and Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Chapel in Osu.

Retrieval of Archival Material (RAM) Project

The Akrofi-Christaller Institute of Theology, Mission and Culture is committed to the ‘research on and publication of the life and witness of the churches in Ghana and Africa as a whole’ and to the wider Christian world. Inspired by this aim, the institute has been involved with the collection and documentation of rare materials including manuscripts, diaries, books, sermons, church records and family memorabilia. The purpose of this project is to make available to Research fellows, students and the ACI community, substantial materials for use in researches and in the writing of theses and dissertations.

Materials have been collected from individuals and churches such as the Odjidja family records, Rev. David Asante, Rev. T. A. Osae, Dr. Ephraim Amu, Very Rev. S.S. Odonkor, Rev. A. L. Kwansa, Rev. Prof. C. G. Baeta and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana archives. All documents have been processed and added to the library stock of books, while those of archival nature have been sent to the Carl C. Reindorf Archives Unit in the Institute to be catalogued – a finding aid is being developed for each of the collections.

In September, 2019, the Institute collected documents from two important persons. On 10th September, collections were received from the family of the Late Kwamena Poh’s library at Mamfe. On 13th September, the Institute participated in the 120th birthday anniversary celebrations of the late Ephraim Amu at Peki – Avetile. A few more of Amu’s diaries were collected on this occasion.

The Institute will continue to identify and collect documents which qualify to be stored in the archives unit from individuals, churches, para-churches, notable pastors and lay people to promote research and teaching among researchers and students.
